Factors influencing young women’s participation in labor force and non-traditional jobs

In partnership with Yuwaah, U-Report India conducted a poll to understand factors impacting young women’s participation in the labour force. The poll also examined whether untraditional jobs are fit and enabling for young women. This poll was targeted youth aged 18 to 29 years and reached 1,005,855 U-Reporters, with 24,755 respondents providing answers to at least 1 question.


The demographic coverage showcased diversity, with 64% of respondents identifying as men and 36% as women. Geographically, the survey was rolled out pan India and received contributions from various regions, with notable participation from states such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. Nearly 66% hailed from non-urban backgrounds. The poll results provide various insights on the topic from this diverse audience. Approximately 30% male and female respondents across all geographical areas believe that encouragement and support from family and community influence young women’s decision to work. Respondents in the village area believe that young women’s preference to stay at home to take care of the child affects her ability to work after child-birth, whereas in the cities and between cities and villages believe that policies and support from employers affect a women’s ability to work after childbirth. Take a look at the Engagement Section of our website for more insights from the poll: https://india.ureport.in/opinion/3358/


The findings from the poll were presented at the national consultation on “Enhancing participation of young women in the labor force” hosted by YuWaah. This event brought together diverse stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities for women’s empowerment in the labor market.
